AUSTIN, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — The governor of Texas has deployed thousands of soldiers and troops to make sure anti-ICE protests remain peaceful.

According to Gov. Greg Abbott, 2,000 troops with the Texas Department of Public Safety and over 5,000 soldiers from the Texas National Guard were deployed Thursday to cities across the state this weekend to "assist local law enforcement" as protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement continue.

"Peaceful protests are part of the fabric of our nation, but Texas will not tolerate the lawlessness we have seen in Los Angeles in response to President Donald Trump's enforcement of immigration law,” said Abbott. "Anyone engaging in acts of violence or damaging property will be arrested and held accountable to the full extent of the law. Don't mess with Texas — and don't mess with Texas law enforcement."

Abbott did not specify which cities the soldiers and troops will be going to.

The City of El Paso said it has not requested any assistance from the Texas National Guard and that it continues to monitor local protests.

On Wednesday, many El Pasoans gathered outside the Richard C. White Federal Building in downtown to protest ICE.

According to City Representative for District 2 Josh Acevedo, the gathering was organized as a way to stand in solidarity with the protests happening in Los Angeles and growing in other big cities across the country.

Protesters waved anti-ICE signs and chanted anti-ICE sentiments.

However, there were no reports of violence.

People in San Antonio witnessed a bigger protest.

Dubbed "Take Back the Alamo," the protest took over San Antonio City Hall and spilled into the streets.

Texas DPS troopers were reportedly present at the protest.

No incidents were reported at the gathering either, according to the San Antonio police department.
