BROOKS COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) — A 17-year-old was charged by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), officials announced Tuesday, May 12, in connection with the death of a 21-year-old whose body was found inside a burning home in Brooks County.
The house fire was on April 5 in the 200 block of Hickory Head Road.
The body found inside the home was identified by the GBI as Datravion Williams, 21, from Quitman.
On Tuesday, the GBI charged Dere’on Mitchell, 17, with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony in connection with Williams’ death.
Mitchell was already in custody at the Brooks County Jail for other charges related to this case, according to the GBI. Officials said he was arrested on April 6 for theft by taking a motor vehicle and two counts of possession of a handgun by a person under the age of 18.
In total, as of Tuesday, May 12, Mitchell faces the following charges:
- Malice Murder
- Felony Murder
- Aggravated Assault
- Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony
- Theft by Taking a Motor Vehicle
- Possession of a Handgun by a Person Under the Age of 18 (2 counts)
The GBI said that additional charges are expected in this investigation. It is unclear whether any individuals besides Mitchell were involved in this case.
