Description
WASHINGTON (TNND) — The Trump administration is cracking down on antisemitism on college campuses, with over 50 colleges and universities under investigation.
However, some are calling for the administration to take a closer look at high school and elementary schools.
The Anti-Defamation League reported 860 antisemitic incidents in K-12 schools in 2024, a 23% decline in incidents compared to 2023, which saw 1,162 incidents.
Since 2020, there has been a 434% increase in antisemitic incidents in high schools, middle schools and elementary schools.
Former New York Lt. Gov. Betsy McCaughey and Former Assistant Secretary of Education for Civil Rights Kenneth Marcus have likened the influx of antisemitism incidents to teachers' unions, pointing to a growing number that have embraced ideology and rhetoric alienating Jewish people.
Just in July, the National Education Association voted to redefine the Holocaust to be more inclusive of other victims. However, its new definition does not make any mention of the six million Jews killed.
Under the NEA's new definition, the Holocaust had more than 12 million victims from “different faiths, political beliefs, genders, and gender identification, abilities/disabilities, and other targeted characteristics.”
NEA members also voted that it would teach students about the Nakba, which is described as the “forced, violent displacement and dispossession of at least 750,000 Palestinians from their homeland in 1948 during the establishment of the state of Israel.”
"Both those measures were included in the NEA Handbook, a document recently removed from the union’s website after it sparked critics’ blowback," McCaughey wrote. "But it’s what a majority of NEA members — teachers in public schools — voted for. A generation of college students, steeped in antisemitism by leftist professors, is bringing the same hate to the public schools where they teach."
In addition, the nation's largest teachers' union voted in July to cut ties with ADL in protest of the Gaza War.
"NEA will not use, endorse, or publicize any materials from the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), such as its curricular materials or its statistics," the measure passed by the NEA stated.
And just a month ago, the United Federation of Teachers endorsed Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani for New York City. He has come under fire for failing to condemn the phrase "Globalize the Intifada," deemed to be a call to attack Jewish people.
Meanwhile, the California Teachers Association opposes a bill in the state legislature that would improve the state's ability to prevent and respond to antisemitism.
