Sheriff John Hinton said at the scene Monday night that the deputy was responding to a domestic situation. Both the deputy and the suspect were shot.
On Tuesday morning, the deputy was identified as 31-year-old Daniel W. Sherrer. A short time later, the suspect was identified as 53-year-old Brian Michael Wilson, who is now charged with aggravated murder.
Hinton provided some details about Sherrer during a news conference Tuesday morning in Morrow County. You can watch that below:
Hinton said Sherrer was in his first law-enforcement job, adding that he was hired in 2021. He's survived by his parents, Hinton said, then listed some of Sherrer's best qualities.
"Glowing personality, the guy was never in a bad mood," Hinton said. "Always had a smile on his face, (he'd ask to) see how your day was, crack a joke. Just a great guy. He will be missed."
Wilson was last said to be in serious condition at Grant Medical Center.
Hinton said he has asked the Delaware County Sheriff's Office to lead the investigation.
Just after 11 a.m. Tuesday, ABC 6 obtained an affidavit outlining the events that led to the shooting. An excerpt from that report is embedded below:
Flag lowered
ABC 6's Kate Siefert captured video of the flag being lowered to half-staff outside the Morrow County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday morning. Watch below:
Domestic violence statistics
ABC 6 has reported on more than 50 cases of homicides stemming from domestic violence since the beginning of 2023, at least in Columbus. After seven such cases were reported in 2022, Columbus police reported 25 in 2023 and 22 more in 2024. So far in 2025, Columbus police have responded to seven homicides from domestic violence calls.
Previous line-of-duty deaths
This is only the second time a law enforcement officer has been killed in the line of duty in Morrow County. The last time was back in 1940.
Patrolman Clarence Upson was killed while trying to prevent a man from driving drunk. The man hit Upson, who fell to the ground and hit his head on the pavement.
In recent months, ABC 6 has covered the on-duty deaths of several corrections officers.
On Christmas Day in 2024, Officer Andrew Lansing was killed at Ross Correctional Institution near Chillicothe. Lansing was 62 years old.
Investigators say Rashawn Cannon attacked and killed Lansing while he was alone in a guard shack.
Cannon is facing murder charges.
Lansing was working an overtime shift that day to allow others to be with their families on the holiday.
Earlier that year, in April 2024, Lt. Rodney Osborne was shot and killed during a training exercise.
Former Corrections Officer David Pearson pleaded guilty to negligent homicide and was sentenced to a maximum of six months in jail.
