Ark. (KATV) — As powerful EF-4 tornadoes ripped through Arkansas on March 14, leaving destruction, injuries, and heartbreak in their path, stories of survival and resilience emerged.
In Diaz, Sergeant Richard Dickie Morris found himself swept up in the storm while on duty, his patrol car hurled through the air before crashing down on another vehicle.
While the EF-4 tornado tore threw the town, Sergeant Richard Dickie Morris was unfortunately on duty and was swept up in the winds.
During the tornado, his car was tossed several feet, where it landed on top of another car in a nearby residence.
His radio was also ripped out of his car, leaving him unable to reach out for help from his fellow officers.
However, he did have his cell phone that he used to call 911 and get assistance.
Once he was located, he was transported to a local hospital before being transferred elsewhere.
Morris did sustain substantial injuries, but he is expected to make a full recovery.
Meanwhile, in Izard County's Violet Hill community, Jim Stegeman and his loved ones narrowly escaped death by sheltering in a small space moments before their home was destroyed.
"At one point I didn't think I was going to make it," Stegeman said. The group sought shelter just in time, cramming into a small space as the tornado passed over. "We got down and all sat in there. It was all over. I heard the aluminum door. It kind of went 'wobobobobop'... then it was all over that quick," he recalled.
Stegeman, who relies on an oxygen tank and is preparing for a life-changing lung procedure, emerged from the shelter to find his home, which he had lived in since 2014, destroyed.
"You can see my whole house is gone... All my tools," he said. Nearby neighborhoods also suffered significant damage. "There's lots of people back there. their whole home is gone, and barns, big barn full of hay, it's all gone," Stegeman added.
Despite the devastation, Stegeman expressed gratitude for surviving the ordeal. "As close as we were to all dying and passing away, we really weren't worried about what it looked like. We just know the Lord saved us," he said.
According to Gary Dickerson with the Izard County Department of Emergency Management, there were four injuries reported but no fatalities. Stegeman and his loved ones are now focusing on where they will call home in the future.
Though the storms claimed three lives and injured dozens, these harrowing accounts reflect the courage and strength of those who endured nature's fury.
