ETTRICK, Va. (WWBT/Gray News) - Five people were injured in an early morning shooting at Virginia State University (VSU), prompting the campus to go on lockdown.

According to VSU Police, the shooting happened around 1:28 a.m. Saturday in the Quad Annexes near Boisseau Street and Third Avenue.

When officers arrived, they found five people suffering from gunshot wounds.

All five victims were taken to nearby hospitals. One victim is in critical condition, and four other victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

VSU confirmed a student was among those injured. The university said they have been treated and released from the hospital.

The campus was under lockdown following the shooting

“The campus community should continue to avoid the area and follow all law enforcement instructions,” the university said in a statement.

VSU Police Chief David Bragg announced around 8:20 a.m. that the lockdown had been lifted and normal access to campus could resume.

Authorities said there will be a heavier police presence on campus Saturday.

“Although the lockdown has been lifted, members of the VSU community are asked to remain mindful of the ongoing law enforcement activity and avoid the immediate area where investigators are processing the scene,” Bragg said.

VSU Police, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office are assisting with the investigation.

Police said they are looking for multiple suspects. No additional information about the suspects has been released.
