ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Senior programs in Albany could continue at a temporary location after city leaders heard a proposal from Sowega Council on Aging about relocating to a local community center.

Sowega leaders are seeking approval from the Albany City Commission to operate senior programs in partnership with the Thornton Community Center gym as the organization relocates from its longtime facility on West Society Avenue.

The non-profit recently sold its facility to Phoebe Medical Center. Sowega plans to operate from a strictly administrative building while partnering with community programs and utilizing their facilities to continue classes and services.

In the proposal presented at the Feb. 12 commission meeting, senior programs would be held at Thornton Gym from Feb. 23 through May 31, 2026, if approved.

Sowega leaders outlined the financial impact of the move during the meeting. They would pay Thornton Community Center a gym rental fee of $75 per class, with an anticipated 10 classes per week.

Leaders said the move ensures seniors will not experience an interruption in programming during the transition.

The city commission plans to vote on the relocation at next Tuesday’s commission mission, Feb. 17.
