ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - South Georgia officials are preparing for the possibility of severe weather conditions ahead of Tuesday and Wednesday’s forecasted wintery mix.

WALB’s First Alert Weather team reports all types of winter precipitation are possible for Tuesday and Wednesday.

The city of Albany will virtually open the Emergency Operations Center on Monday, Jan. 20 at 6 p.m.

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) will start pre-treating roads on Sunday with brine. The department will treat I-75 and other major four-lane roads heavily traveled throughout South Georgia.

Brine truck operators and plow trucks will also travel to Atlanta over the weekend to help with needs in the Metro Atlanta area.

“We hope Southwest Georgia will be lucky and not get anything, but we just don’t know at this point. GDOT is watching and planning and will respond accordingly,” said Nita Birmingham, GDOT Southwest Georgia district representative. “If we get ice people need to stay off the road because that hampers our ability to treat the roads.”
