COFFEE COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - For many seniors living in nursing homes, the holidays can be a quiet and lonely time. But for residents at Lakeside Senior Living, one group of students helped change that with music, memories, and meaningful connections.

West Green Elementary students brought holiday cheer to Lakeside as part of a show choir visit on December 12, one stop in a full morning of performances at local nursing homes across Coffee County. The group began singing at Lakeside around 9:30 a.m., later visiting Vista and The Landings, walking through hallways and common areas to make sure residents who rarely leave their rooms could still take part.

Students say the experience was emotional and rewarding, especially seeing how the residents reacted to the music. Several said watching residents smile, cry, and sing along reminded them why they enjoy performing for others.

For Lakeside resident Sally Brown, the visit brought back memories of holidays spent with her late husband. She said hearing the students sing allowed her to reflect on those moments and feel a sense of comfort during the season.

As the students moved closer, the experience became even more personal. One by one, they shared hugs with Brown and other residents, a gesture she says meant just as much as the songs themselves. Brown said the students didn’t have to do it, but chose to, and that choice made her feel remembered and loved.

Brown shared that faith, along with the care she receives at Lakeside, helps her through the holidays. She said prayer and the support of those around her continue to be a source of strength during this season.

Students say these visits are about more than performing. They’re about connection and giving residents a reason to come out, interact, and feel seen. For many residents, the caroling served as a reminder that even when the holidays feel quieter than they once did, joy and companionship are still present. The West Green Elementary show choir plans to continue visiting nursing homes, spreading holiday cheer, and creating moments that residents and students say they won’t forget.
