ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) — Now that Christmas Day has passed, several South Georgia cities are advertising Christmas tree drop off and recycling opportunities. This way, live Christmas trees can get a second chance at life.

So far, WALB has been notified of such opportunities in Cordele, Thomasville and Valdosta. We will update this list if we find other areas with similar initiatives.

Cordele

In Cordele, the Keep Crisp Beautiful organization is hosting “Bring One for the Chipper.” People will receive a free seedling for each Christmas tree they bring in for composting, while supplies last. The city said trees should be free of any decorations.

  • Jan. 3 - 31
  • Williams Field: 1015 East 15th Avenue

For more information, the city said to contact Monica at (229) 273-1668 or email [email protected] .

Thomasville

In Thomasville, another “Bring One for the Chipper” drive is being held from Dec. 26 to Jan. 3. Trees that are live, unbound and free of decorations may be dropped off at locations across Thomas County. The trees will reportedly be turned into mulch for public use. Organizers will be giving out free t-shirts, insulated tote bags and more while supplies last.

  • Dec. 26 - Jan 3, from 9 a.m. to noon
  • Thomas County Recycling Center: 1300 block of Remington Avenue (behind the Thomas County EMS/Fire Station)
  • Other locations listed here.

Valdosta

The city of Valdosta is taking live Christmas trees to recycle them. The city’s public works department emphasized that keeping trees out of landfills supports environmentally responsible disposal. The city did not provide an end date for this opportunity.

  • Hours: Tuesday - Friday 7 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.; Saturday 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
  • City of Valdosta Recycling Center: 3130 Val Tech Road

For more information, you can call the city’s public works office at (229)259-3590.
