CARROLLTON, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Thieves left a complete mess for the owners of Tag Collects to clean up on the morning of Christmas Eve.
“I called my business partner. He said, ‘Hey, Merry Christmas, we got robbed,’” said co-founder Tommy Brown.
Brown said the store had only been open for two months. It prides itself on its products and collectible items.
“I guess one of the main ways to find happiness today is nostalgia, and collectibles and stuff like that,” said Brown.
“About 90% is Pokémon, but we mainly sell trading card game products,” said Brown.
Brown said the thief, caught on camera, got away with between $80,000 and $100,000 worth of products.
“That doesn’t count the door or the flooring we have to have replaced. He took a tow hitch ball and threw it through the door, so there are just scratches all over the floor,” said Brown.
“I hate that anybody in this world has to do that, has to rob anybody to get something they want,” said Brown.
This is something that has been happening across metro Atlanta.
Thieves are recognizing the value of rare Pokémon cards and stealing them from collectibles shops. Tag Collects has to shut down for at least a few days, and even insurance can only do so much.
“Some of the stuff they took I can’t get again because it’s not there,” he said.
Despite the break-in, Brown remembers why he and his business partners opened the store. He said the setback will not stop them.
“We brought this for the community, we did this for the community and he’s not going to push us away from them,” said Brown.
Brown said they hope to have the store reopened by Wednesday, Dec. 31. If you wish to help the store, click here.
