Description

POULAN, GA (WALB) - What started as a 911 call reporting domestic violence at a home in Poulan turned into an hours-long standoff with gunfire from both the suspect and law enforcement.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has identified the suspect as Jordan Wheatley, a 33-year-old man.

It started at about 8:10 p.m. on Sunday, May 11 at a home on Hickory Street in Worth County, according to the GBI.

The GBI said Wheatley fired shots at the Poulan Police Department (PPD) officer who was responding to a domestic violence call that came from the Hickory Street home. Those gunshots prompted a response from several other agencies, including the Worth County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO).

Worth County Sheriff Don Whitaker said Wheatley tried to sneak out the back of the home, but he was stopped by Worth County deputies who instructed him to put down his weapon. Wheatley reportedly then fired several shots at the deputies, and one of the deputies fired back. No one was hit by the gunfire, according to both the WCSO and the GBI.

After firing shots, Wheatley reportedly barricaded himself in a bedroom, prompting a SWAT team to enter the home.

Officials said Wheatley was discovered in a bedroom with what is believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was arrested and transported to the hospital where he is being treated for his gunshot wound.

The GBI said they will conduct an independent investigation.
