TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - A shooting near Florida A&M University’s campus Saturday night has left the community shaken and raised concerns about safety during homecoming celebrations.

The shooting happened near Perry and Manatee Streets around 8 p.m., in an area commonly used by vendors during homecoming. Stephanie Walters, who helps run HBCU Culture Shop, said she heard multiple gunshots.

“It’s unfortunate because beyond business-wise, people are just scared,” Walters said. “If you were out here, you heard the shots; it was a lot of gunshots. It was no doubt in my mind that someone was injured.”

More Tallahassee news:

Walters has traveled from Tampa to Tallahassee for the past nine years to operate the shop during homecoming.

While she values the tradition and sense of community, she said the shooting has her questioning whether she will return next year.

“I’m not necessarily worried about if we’re able to come back; I’m more so worried about if we want to come back,” Walters said. “You want to be able to be in community with your people, you want to be able to have the homecoming traditions but you have to be safe. I don’t want to have to be concerned that the next time I show up, I may not leave.”

The university said on social media that campus was considered safe as police continued investigating.
