ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Multiple children were treated for heat-related illness near an Atlanta school on Friday afternoon.
The Atlanta Fire Department responded to the 98 block of Anderson Avenue NW, which is next to KIPP Atlanta Collegiate.
At least one child was experiencing heat exhaustion and another had an “altered level of consciousness,” they said. Another patient was evaluated for “a minor nosebleed.”
A representative from the school says it did not take place on campus. They said there is a park nearby where the kids may have been.
Additional EMS resources were brought to the scene to assist.
Temperatures Friday afternoon were in the 90s, but the heat index made it feel like the mid- to upper-90s.
“As temperatures continue to rise across the region, Atlanta Fire Rescue encourages residents and visitors to take precautions against heat-related illness,” an Atlanta Fire spokesperson said.
Signs of heat exhaustion may include heavy sweating, dizziness, headache, nausea, weakness, muscle cramps, or fatigue, the department said.
Atlanta Fire warns people spending time outside to drink water regularly, seek shade or air-conditioned spaces, wear lightweight clothing, and avoid waiting until they feel thirsty to hydrate.
It is unknown why the children were gathered at the location.
