ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) — Students from pre-K through high school participated in a day of service at Turtle Park on Monday, Jan. 19, serving soup, hot chocolate, sandwiches and other items to people experiencing homelessness and others in need as part of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day observances across South Georgia.
The event was organized by the Albany chapter of Jack and Jill of America, an organization that brings young volunteers together to give back to the community.
Alfreda Sheppard, the Albany chapter’s president who organized the event, said she was proud of the students who volunteered their time to help keep King’s message of service and compassion alive.
“It makes me feel very proud of the work that the Albany chapter of Jack and Jill of America is doing in the community, but it also makes me proud as a parent and as a mom to be able to show my children and other children the importance of giving back to those who are in need,” Sheppard said.

Organizers said the Day of Service serves as a reminder that honoring King’s legacy goes beyond words and is best reflected through action and service to others.
