BAINBRIDGE, Ga. (WCTV) - The City of Bainbridge doubled up on its MLK celebrations on Monday, honoring a long-standing tradition while also making room for something new.

Organizers said that for the last 53 years, the city has kicked off its MLK parade in the morning, marching down MLK Street to honor the day and its history. This year, however, organizers say a newly formed group asked for changes — including moving the parade to a different street.

Instead of choosing one or the other, they decided to do both — keeping the tradition alive while also creating something new.

Organizers say the goal was inclusivity. while giving all groups and generations a chance to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and legacy throughout the day.

Community members like Angel Noble said that change can be a good thing.

“It’s also good to remember the old and then to bring out the new generation where they can have things all day and not just the first thing in the morning,” Noble said.

Organizers said it will be up to the people of Bainbridge to decide if this two-part celebration continues next year. Organizers like Pastor Kelvin Wells said Monday was a success and brought the community together in a way they believe Dr. King would have wanted.

“I think it’s very important we don’t just remain in the past, but we project the present and project the future, and I think that’s what today is done,” Wells said.
