The GDPH inspects more than just restaurants. “We regulate or permit all food service establishments, these could be your local restaurants, catering operations, mobile food trucks, institutions such as schools or hospitals. We also do inspections and permitting at temporary food service events, which will include fairs and festivals,” says Johnson.
You can watch the full interview with District Environmental Health Director, Ansley Johnson, here:
Interview with District Environmental Health Director Ansley JohnsonFor those opening a food service establishment, understanding GDPH inspection procedures—including frequency and regulations—is crucial to success. Johnson notes, “Your typical routine inspections are done unannounced, which gives us a better idea of how the facility operates on a day-to-day basis.”
Most restaurants maintain satisfactory scores, but those receiving unsatisfactory ratings must follow a specific corrective process. “If a facility earns an unsatisfactory rating, what they are required to do is correct the violation within 24 hours or no less than 72 hours, and our office is required by the rules to go back and do a reinspection within 10 business days,” says Johnson.
The GDPH offers resources to help establishments maintain healthy environments. Johnson adds, “Our office is always willing to help or be available to those who are opening a facility; we want them to open up in the best possible light.”
