WASHINGTON (TNND) — Rep. Greg Casar (D-TX) will not run in his district if Texas Republicans' efforts to redraw the state's district lines are successful, opting instead to run in the district currently represented by his colleague Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-TX).

The new map drawn by Texas Republicans seeks to create five new Congressional districts for the GOP, leading to parts of Casar's district — such as a portion of Austin — to be absorbed by Doggett's district, which is the 37th district.

Republicans' redrawing of the 35th district, currently represented by Casar, would encompass fewer than 10% of Casar's constituents and it does not include any part of Austin which Casar has called home since graduating college, according to an email written by Casar's chief of staff that was obtained by Punchbowl News.

"Greg leaving Austin to run this new South Texas seat would deprive Austin of Greg's voice and growing influence as new chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, and it would undercut Democrats' chance to win in the new South Texas by running a candidate with deep ties to that community," Casar's chief of staff wrote. "As Greg has said clearly: his focus is on fighting the maps, but whatever happens, he will be running for reelection in Austin."

Doggett, who has been in Congress for more than 30 years, has insisted on Casar to leave his district alone and instead focus on winning the newly drawn 35th district. With a Hispanic majority, Doggett said the seat is “probably the most winnable Trump-created new district," Politico reported.

“He has the potential to use his organizing skills and populist message to win over the disaffected, particularly disaffected Hispanic voters,” Doggett said. “This could become a national model for turning back the Trump tide. Without Greg’s power of incumbency and ability to attract support, this seat could be lost by a weaker Democratic nominee.”

Aside from Casar's district, the redrawn map targets districts represented by Reps. Marc Veasey (D-TX), Julie Johnson (D-TX), Al Green (D-TX), Vicente Gonzalez (D-TX), and Henry Cuellar (D-TX).

However, lawmakers' approval for the new map has been stalled as Texas Democratic lawmakers fled the state ten days ago to break quorum to prevent the new map's passage. In spite of Gov. Greg Abbott's threats, including fining the lawmakers and kicking them out of office, the Democrats have been stubborn. While the state's special legislative session is set to expire on Friday, Abbott has promised that he would continue to call special sessions until the map gets passed.
