Description
QUITMAN, Ga. (WCTV) - One confirmed case of distemper has been reported in Quitman, prompting local officials to urge pet owners to watch for signs of the highly contagious virus.
Distemper affects the respiratory, gastrointestinal and nervous systems of dogs, ferrets and wildlife such as raccoons and foxes. Officials say the virus can spread from wildlife to pets.
Quitman Animal Control Officer Anna Strickland said early symptoms often include nasal discharge, coughing and lethargy. More severe signs may include disorientation and seizures. She stressed the importance of keeping pets’ vaccinations current.
“It’s fatal. That’s the end result of distemper cases,” Strickland said. “Distemper is fatal to dogs, it is fatal to wildlife, so a simple vaccine can prevent you from losing your pet.”

She said the Tractor Supply store in Quitman offers vaccination clinics twice a month.
Officials encourage pet owners who notice symptoms to contact a veterinarian immediately. Anyone who sees potentially sick wildlife should notify their local animal control office.
“One of the main things is that distemper will cause wildlife to lose fear of humans, so they are likely to approach you,” Strickland said. “If you see a fox or raccoon that is approachable, that is not normal.”
Distemper can mimic rabies.
The virus is not contagious to people, according to Strickland.
