Albany State is set to face the Valdosta State Blazers, a matchup expected to draw a large crowd as two South Georgia powerhouses meet again on the field. The Albany Police Department (APD) says it is preparing for a significant turnout and plans to increase safety measures throughout the day.
Police Chief Michael Persley said the department will use many of the same precautions implemented during ASU’s Homecoming earlier this year. He said the goal is to keep fans safe while maintaining a welcoming game-day atmosphere.

“Just because you have increased security doesn’t mean we don’t want people to enjoy themselves,” Persley said. “When you do have increased security, it means you don’t have to worry about anything — You can go and enjoy yourself. We want people to come and enjoy, so do expect to see all of the law enforcement agencies who will be participating to make sure this is a good, safe, successful event.”
Among the safety measures are metal detectors at stadium entrances, a clear-bag policy and an increased number of patrol units surrounding the venue.
City officials are also warning fans to expect traffic delays before and after the game. Heavy congestion is anticipated along Joseph Holley Circle, Gillionville Road and areas surrounding the ASU campus. Police urge drivers to arrive early, follow posted detours and be patient as officers work to direct traffic.
The playoff matchup is scheduled for Saturday on the Albany State campus at 1 p.m.
