WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump said Russian President Vladimir Putin told him "very strongly" during a phone call on Wednesday that he will respond to Ukraine's weekend drone attack on the airfields.
Trump called it a "good conversation, but not a conversation that will lead to immediate Peace."
The discussion comes after peace talks between Ukraine and Russia remain at an impasse. Leaders met for a second time in Istanbul on Monday and agreed to swap 6,000 bodies of soldiers killed in action.
Trump did not say how he responded to Putin's promise to attack Ukraine, but seemed to refrain from voicing his frustrations with the Russian leader as he has done in the past.
He called out the Russian leader last week, saying he "has gone absolutely CRAZY!"
The two also discussed Iran's nuclear program.
"We also discussed Iran, and the fact that time is running out on Iran's decision pertaining to nuclear weapons, which must be made quickly!" Trump said.
"I stated to President Putin that Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon and, on this, I believe that we were in agreement," he continued. "President Putin suggested that he will participate in the discussions with Iran and that he could, perhaps, be helpful in getting this brought to a rapid conclusion."
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth skipped a meeting in Brussels on Wednesday of an international group coordinating military aid to Ukraine. It was the first time America’s Pentagon chief didn’t attend alongside 50 other defense leaders since the U.S. created the group three years ago.
Ukraine’s Security Service said Tuesday it managed to destroy the bridge connecting Russia and the occupied Crimean Peninsula with explosives planted underwater.
SBU said it used 1,100 kilograms of explosives to "severely damage" the underwater pillars supporting the bridge.
