Description
A movement to protest the early actions of President Donald Trump's administration took off Wednesday.
Large crowds of demonstrators gathered at state capitols nationwide.
Protesters waved signs decrying Trump; billionaire Elon Musk, the leader of Trump's new Department of Government Efficiency; and Project 2025.
"We the people reject Project 2025," said a sign held by one demonstrator outside the South Carolina State House in Columbia.
Protestors are demanding representation for the following:
- Freedom of Speech
- Racial Equality
- Election Integrity
- Women's Rights
- LGBTQ+
- Public Health and Safety
- Gun Safety
- Climate Change
- Wealth Equality
The protests come from a movement that has organized online under the hashtags #buildtheresistance and #50501, which stands for 50 protests, 50 states, one day.
Outside the West Virginia State Capitol in Charleston attracted a large crowd.
“We’re here to let our voices be heard, we’re against putting down anyone that’s a minority,” Robin Cutlip, president of Women’s March West Virginia told WCHS. “We’re going to stand up for anybody and everybody, and we’re going to be the voices for those who cannot be heard.”
KEYE in Austin, Texas reported that hundreds of protesters assembled outside the Texas State Capitol. Protesters chanted, "No hate, no fear, immigrants are welcome here." Participants carried signs reading "Immigrants make America great" and "Deport Elon [Musk]," according the local news station reported.
Protesters across the country denounced everything from Trump's plans for Gaza to the rollback of rights for transgender neighbors and recent efforts to deport migrants who are in the U.S. illegally.
Dozens of people took to the streets in Wheeling. WTOV reported that Ohio County Democratic Women were among the groups participating, joining others who protested in the state's capital. Barb LaRue, co-president of the Ohio County Democratic Women, chimed in about the West Virginia rally.
"It's frustrating to the American people. It's demeaning to people," said LaRue."Everyone should be treated as equal and with respect, and that's not happening right now."
"And one big thing we're fighting against is Elon Musk. He wasn't elected," added Teddie Grogan, also a co-president of the Ohio County Democratic Women. "He bought an election from the president, and he's been given free will, and that's not right in our democracy."
Protesters in Springfield, Illinois were also seen at the State Capitol, WICS reported.
More than 100 protesters at the federal building in downtown Asheville called for an end to Elon Musk's access to the U.S. government and its databases.
For many of these protesters in Asheville, Musk's new access is a step too far.
"He's not elected and he's taking over huge swaths of the government. He's got his interns – one of them is 19 years old – doing this stuff," Carolyn Griffith with Indivisible Asheville told WLOS.
Trump has signed a series of executive orders in the first couple of weeks of his new term on everything from trade and immigration to climate change. As Democrats begin to raise their voice in opposition to Trump's agenda, protests have also begun.
On Monday, thousands of people marched against Trump's plan for large-scale deportations in Southern California, including in downtown Los Angeles, where protests shut down a major freeway for hours.
