ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — The man accused of killing a Gwinnett County police officer and injuring another in a shooting has been charged, according to the sheriff’s office.
Kevin Andrews faces charges of malice murder, felony murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and two counts of aggravated assault against law enforcement.
Andrews had his first appearance on Monday. He did not receive bond.

On Sunday, Officer Pradeep Tamang and Cpl. David Reed were called to a Holiday Inn Express off Park Place Boulevard in Stone Mountain, where Andrews was suspected of fraudulently renting a room.
Police said the two officers were invited inside the room. But when they discovered Andrews had an arrest warrant for failing to appear in DeKalb County court and tried to arrest him, Andrews allegedly pulled out a handgun and fired.
Both officers were hit and fired back at Andrews. All three were taken to the hospital.

Tamang died, while Reed was seriously hurt. Andrews had non-life-threatening injuries.
Originally from Nepal, Tamang joined the Gwinnett County Police Department in spring 2025.
“To the Gwinnett community, we, as a police department, will not be deterred. We will continue to provide for the safety of this community,” Police Chief J.D. McClure said. “We ask the community to continue to support us.”
Pragyan Tamang, the officer’s younger brother, said he was engaged.
“It’s my brother’s fiancée [who] lost her partner, her life partner,” he said. “She cried earlier about how she never got to marry, he never got to have kids, the life he wanted.”
On Tuesday, Gwinnett County police staff and the community continued to place flowers on a patrol car in front of the department’s headquarters in Tamang’s honor.
Luis Gonzalez, a former volunteer firefighter, said he understands how dangerous and unpredictable being a first responder can be.
“Everyone who puts their lives at risk to protect anyone and the community is a hero,” he said. “... There’s always someone at home waiting for them, and when they don’t come back because they put their lives at risk for our safety, it’s very hard.”
