Description

SOUTH GEORGIA (WALB) - The Pineland Road Fire is now 23% contained, according to officials.

The massive wildfire has already caused damage to active rail lines, utility transmission lines, and has torn through portions of the commercial timber industry. Fire crews continue working to strengthen containment lines as dry conditions and smoke remain concerns.

Officials say 187 homes, 123 minor structures, hunting camps, commercial timber operations, and bee businesses are considered at risk, especially in the Fruitland and Bamberg areas.

Smoke impacts are also expected in nearby communities, including Valdosta, Homerville, and Fargo. Residents in affected areas are urged to stay alert for changing conditions and possible air quality concerns.
