ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) — A local real estate agency suffered an estimated $300,000 to $400,000 in losses after a vacant property was burglarized Friday, June 19, according to the Albany Police Department.

Officers responded to a criminal trespass complaint at 153 North Slappey Blvd. Police said they made contact with Nathan Young, an employee of Brooks Real Estate.

Forced entry found at vacant building

Young told officers he arrived at the property around 9 a.m. to check the vacant building and continue repairs. He said he had last been at the property about one month earlier.

According to police, Young said the owner, Bob Brooks, is trying to sell or lease the building.

While inspecting the property, Young found signs of forced entry at the rear of the building. Police said a hole had been cut into the fence, and door locks had been broken and scattered on the ground.

Copper and electrical equipment stolen

Young told officers two air conditioning units had been damaged and that copper wiring and copper tubing had been stolen.

Police said Young also reported that the electrical breaker box had been removed and stolen. The damage left the building without functioning air conditioning, electrical service and water service.

There were no operational surveillance cameras at the property because the owner had previously instructed Young to disconnect electrical service to the building, according to police.

Young estimated the loss, including stolen items and damage to the building, at about $300,000 to $400,000.
