VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) - Housing insecurity has become a problem for families in South Georgia, and one organization says it wants to change this statistic.
Black to the Future Action Fund is working with Valdosta officials to make affordable housing accessible. Policies the organization is fighting to change include eliminating junk application fees and requirements, increasing housing supply with more affordable units in high-traffic areas, and keeping rent reasonable for working-class families.
Community leaders gathered via Zoom on Thursday to highlight the housing needs of communities in Georgia. They said they have spent three years doing this work and have reached thousands of homes within the Valdosta area.
“When we are seeing home insurance rates rising, in Georgia becoming number 8 out of 10 states with the highest insurance premiums, that’s creating a crisis where folks are not going to be able to own their home,” said Mia Logan, the Senior Advisor for Climate Power. “They are not going to be able to build wealth and pass it down.”
Organization leaders said Valdosta is a major center of their work through Black Futures, but they are also doing similar work in places like Tifton, Albany, and Decatur County. They called this their push for affordable housing in South Georgia because the region has been heavily neglected.
The organization will hold an in-person gathering Friday, February 21 at 11:30 a.m. at Crossing Jordan Baptist Church, 1401 Cypress St., Valdosta.
