ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) — Families in Albany found a way to save money and reduce waste this holiday season through a free Kids Clothing and Toy Swap hosted by St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church.
The event invited families to donate gently used children’s clothing, toys, books and games in exchange for tokens, which could then be used to select items during the swap. Organizers said the system encourages quality donations while ensuring all items remain free for participants.
“We get no benefit from this. We have no gain from this,” said Annie Van Oteghem, Director of Children and Family Ministries at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church. “We’re just giving our time and welcoming people into our church. It feels really good to have people come together, build community and spread a little bit of Christmas joy.”
Church leaders said the event reflects the importance of community support, especially during challenging times.
“I think it’s important for people to understand that not everything has to be new and shiny to be loved,” one organizer said. “It’s wonderful for neighbors to support neighbors, especially during hard times, but really any time of year is a great way to build that community connection.”
Kyle Mackey, rector of St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church, said events like the swap demonstrate the power of collective generosity.
“It makes me feel like the message is getting through,” Mackey said. “We’re more powerful together than when we are divided. Things we don’t need can become Christmas gifts for others.”
Church leaders said the Kids Clothing and Toy Swap is one of several ways St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church aims to support local families and foster community connection during the holiday season.
