ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - A new sports league in Albany is aiming to give young people more than just a place to play.

Organizers say the United Sports League was created to help keep kids active, connected, and away from violence during the summer months.

Fredrick Walker, creator of United Sports League, said the program was born out of tragedy.

“Well, what gave birth to USL is all the pain and suffering that the mothers and fathers been going through, burying their children at a young age real early, you know, basically for nonsense,” Walker said. “So that’s what gave birth to the USL alternative. Another opportunity for you to do something besides hanging out in the streets.”

Community response

According to crime data, Albany continues to face violence challenges with hundreds of violent crimes reported in recent years. Multiple parents say programs like this can help provide positive alternatives for young people during the summer when school is out.

“This means a lot in Albany because it ain’t nothing to do here. So having this for him. Him growing up, opportunity to keep him off the streets. You know it means a lot,” one parent said.

Another parent said the program offers hope during a difficult time.

“So every year, man, during school time, when school ends, the summer ends. You know, I mean, we’re in a small community, but there’s a lot of death going on, a lot of gang participation. Give him something to do, man. Try to get him out the street and save him,” the parent said.

“Just something to do besides hang around and think of negative things to do. It’s a lot of negative going on in this city, so anybody that’s trying to bring it together and pull positive together, I’m all for it,” another parent said.

League plans

The league hosted flag football tryouts with the goal of teaching young athletes about mentorship, teamwork, and keeping kids engaged during the summer months.

Walker, a disabled veteran, said he is overwhelmed knowing he is able to help the younger generation.

“Oh man. It’s a it’s a joy. It’s a blessing, man. I’m like I said, I’m a disabled veteran. And it brings me joy to see, uh, this happiness and just the I mean, it’s hard to explain, man,” Walker said.

Leaders say as the league grows they plan to offer more sports year-round.
