WASHINGTON, D.C. (7News) — Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Ted Cruz (R-Texas) is slated to unveil new aviation safety legislation on Tuesday following January's deadly midair collision near the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA).
67 people died on Jan. 29 when an Army Black Hawk helicopter collided with an American Eagle Flight 5342 from Wichita that was about to land.
The tragedy spurred what aviation experts believe is a long-needed effort to overhaul the country's air traffic control system.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy recently told Congress that the total cost of modernizing air traffic control will be $31.5 billion. Earlier this month, 7News covered an "Air Traffic Control Modernization Summit," where people from various parts of the aviation community expressed strong support for Duffy’s plan.
At Tuesday's hearing starting at 11:30 a.m., Sen. Cruz, along with Duffy, NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy, and several others speaking on behalf of Flight 5342, are expected to speak.
