MOULTRIE, Ga. (WALB) — The city of Moultrie is preparing to launch a downtown project that highlights the city’s history through QR codes placed on buildings and monuments throughout the area.
Main Street Manager Caroline Barber said the goal is to make local history easy to access, allowing residents and visitors to connect with the stories behind the places they see every day.
“As the Main Street manager and as a dame, I think it’s very important that we preserve our history for the generations to come,” Barber said.
She added that until this project came into the works, much of Moultrie’s history was not accessible online. Barber said that this is good for the community both because it will help with historic preservation and because community members want to learn.
“People are interested. They want to know what came before them,” Barber said.
The QR codes take users to a website for that specific building or monument and display pictures of how that place developed over time. The individual websites also include facts about the historical places.
Judy Mobley, the historical activity chairman for the colonial dames, said this will help people feel more connected to Moultrie.
“I think it will enlighten them, and they’ll learn a lot of interesting facts about their history. And I think we’ll be able to pass it on to future generations. I’ve learned so much. It’s been very enlightening and entertaining, and I think it gives you a sense of ownership to your community,” Mobley said.
Several people downtown said they believe this project will have a lasting impact by making local history more visible and easier to engage with.
“It’s important,” one resident added. “The future generation has hope, has something tangible, something materialistic and tangent they can hold on to. You can tell about an architectural work of the old buildings. Why would you tear that down? You got to preserve history. I think that’s important for knowledge. You got to know where you came from, who founded this town.”
The project is designed to help future citizens of Moultrie learn the history of their city while making the downtown area more interactive for everyone who visits.
