ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) — Three years after her son was shot in the head and killed, Latosha Winchester still lives with the fact that his killer still walks free.

At just 20 years old, Jahtay Raeqwon Winchester was shot and killed on the 700 block of West Society Avenue on Sept. 19, 2023. He was taken to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, where he died.

Police say when they got there, they found seven shell casings in the grass on West Society Avenue.

According to an incident report released by APD, a witness says they observed “...an unknown black male subject wearing dark clothing and a black face mask… with a handgun in his right waistband and a long gun like an “M16” in his hands.”

The witness went on to say, “....the male suspect walked up beside 718 W Society Ave and began to fire shots from the long gun into a car. The male suspect left the scene traveling north on Stadium Dr, where he entered an unknown make and model brown car and left the area.”

Latosha describes her late son as someone who often kept to himself.

“Jahtay was a really very quiet person. He was all to himself. Never messed with nobody. Loved his phone and his game. He was never a troublemaker,” said Winchester.

Three years later, Latosha’s memories of her son remain strong. Although she can’t get him back, she says she wants answers so she can finally be at ease.

“I know it won’t bring my son back, but the only thing I want is justice for my son, and I’ll be at peace.”

Albany Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Bureau is asking for the public’s help in identifying a suspect.
