Description

EUGENE, Ore. (KVAL) — The University of Oregon (UO) confirmed Tuesday that three additional international students have had their visas revoked by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on unspecified criminal charges. This comes after a student had their visa revoked last week, bringing the total to four so far.

In an update sent to KVAL News, the university said they were not informed in advance and were not given details about the nature of the charges.

Should a student's F-1 visa be terminated, the university is required to inform students. The students are then given 15 days to leave unless they have other legal options to pursue.

The reason for the student's visa revocation remains unknown, but it is part of a broader trend of immigration status threats faced by students across the country following President Donald Trump's crackdown on immigration. This includes students who participated in pro-Palestine protests on college campuses.

The Trump administration has cited a seldom-used statute allowing the expulsion of noncitizens if their presence threatens U.S. foreign policy interests. This has led to arrests, deportations, and some students fleeing the U.S. after learning their visas were revoked.

The university said they are closely working with students who have had their visas revoked, including connecting them to legal resources, advising, and helping them to navigate the next steps.

University officials said they are committed to handling the matter with care and respecting the students' privacy.

Officials added that they did not bring individuals to the attention of federal authorities and had no involvement in regard to their visa status.

The students were in good academic standing, according to the university.

The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services states that the F-1 visa is for full-time academic students at accredited colleges, universities, and other institutions.

Students must be enrolled in a program or course of study that culminates in a degree, diploma or certificate.

There are currently 796 active student visas on file, but not all of them are currently enrolled.

KVAL News reached out to ICE and the state department last week, and once more again on Tuesday, in regards to the first UO student to get their visa revoked.

They have not responded to our questions.
