Description
(TNND) — A new list of nearly 125 used vehicle models is meant to offer safe and budget-friendly options for teen drivers.
Seventy-four of the suggested models cap out at $10,000.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and Consumer Reports have worked together on this annual list since 2020.
“What we're really looking for is vehicles that will protect a teen in the event of a crash and also help the teen avoid the crash in the first place,” said Jessica Jermakian, IIHS senior vice president for vehicle research.
Teen drivers are three times as likely as adult drivers to be involved in a fatal crash and about four times as likely to be involved in any kind of police-reported crash.
“We know that teens are inexperienced. They're immature. And they have the highest crash rates of anyone,” Jermakian said. “So, it's particularly important to put them in a safe vehicle that they can control."
The list avoids the smallest, lightest vehicles that might not offer enough protection during a crash.
The list avoids the largest, heaviest vehicles that can be harder for a young driver to handle and present more of a risk to others on the road.
And it excludes cars with lots of horsepower.
“So, no muscle cars in that group,” Jermakian said.
Otherwise, there’s a lot of variety. There are cars, SUVs and minivans.

There are 74 “good choices” that stay under $10,000.
“The great news is that there are a lot of options on this list,” Jermakian said.
Some suggestions are well under $10,000, such as the Nissan Sentra that costs around $4,400.
There are 48 “best choices” that Jermakian said cap out at $20,000 and include standard automatic emergency braking systems and do well in IIHS’ headlight testing.
They also included 22 new cars that are, of course, more expensive but good options for parents shopping for something they can drive now and hand down to their kid in a few years.

The list incorporates research from both IIHS and Consumer Reports.
That includes IIHS tests to see how well vehicles protect occupants in front and side crashes.
