Description
Macon-Bibb Planning and Zoning has implemented a moratorium on issuing permits and rezoning requests for vape shops. The decision, announced Monday, aims to provide staff with time to review and revise regulations to improve standards for smoke shops in the area. Jeff Ruggieri, executive director of Macon-Bibb Planning and Zoning, explained the need for the pause, citing concerns over the number of vape shops in the county, estimated to be between 50 and 70.
Ruggieri said, "We probably need some sort of criteria since other municipalities around us, and some other co-adjacent communities, have all done what kind of what we're doing. They've put moratoriums on the vape shops themselves." He added that without specific regulations, Macon-Bibb could become a hub for vape shops.
The commission determined that the current Comprehensive Land Development Resolution does not adequately address the regulation and location of vape shops. The moratorium will last until Jan. 5, during which time staff will work to establish criteria for where smoke shops can be located, potentially setting specific distances from schools, parks, and other areas frequented by children.
Efforts to gather reactions from vape shop owners were unsuccessful, as none agreed to comment on camera. The commission plans to define vape shops and designate zoning districts where they can operate.
