NEW YORK (TNND) — Accused killer Luigi Mangione is set to be arraigned in a New York federal courtroom Friday on a four-count indictment for the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
Mangione was indicted earlier this month for murder through the use of a firearm, firearms offense and two counts of stalking. He also faces separate state murder charges.
He is scheduled to be arraigned at 1 p.m. in a Manhattan federal courtroom.
Mangione is accused of shooting the 50-year-old executive in the back outside a Manhattan hotel on Dec. 4. Thompson was in town for an investors conference when he was killed.
Following the alleged shooting of Thompson, Mangione led police on a five-day manhunt before he was arrested at a McDonald's in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi directed federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty against Mangione, following through on the president's campaign promise to vigorously pursue capital punishment.
“Luigi Mangione’s murder of Brian Thompson — an innocent man and father of two young children — was a premeditated, cold-blooded assassination that shocked America,” Bondi said in a statement. “After careful consideration, I have directed federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty in this case as we carry out President Trump’s agenda to stop violent crime and Make America Safe Again.”
It's the first death penalty case sought by the Justice Department since President Donald Trump returned to office in January with a vow to resume federal executions after they were halted under the Biden administration.
During an arraignment hearing in December, Mangione pleaded not guilty to a state indictment and has not entered a plea to the federal charges.
