ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) — City commissioners will tour the Ritz Theater, inspecting the building that closed nearly two decades ago. If they follow through with the project, they will have a clear picture of the theater’s current condition and its potential after restoration.
Architect Gene Dunwoody of Dunwoody Beelen Architects told commissioners his team is in the late design phase. Dunwoody said the team has completed about 95% of the construction documents and have secured roughly half of the capital funding.
The plan calls for restoring the theater to its former glory while preserving its history. While preserving the theater’s original layout and historic character, the building will get new lighting, plumbing and a modern AV/sound system, plus updated seating, contemporary fixtures and a refreshed overall look.
The project currently carries a $4.9 million estimate. The team has already secured about $2.3 million and is pursuing additional grants and competitive bids.
Dunwoody said contractors are starting to show interest. The city plans to put the project up for bid in early 2026.
WALB’s Zoe Wells will have more in our later newscasts.
