Description
ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Lawmakers across Georgia are responding to the death of former President Jimmy Carter on Sunday, Dec. 29.
The 39th U.S. president died at 100 years old at his home in Plains after going into hospice care in February 2023. This makes him the longest-living president in U.S. history.
Several leaders in Georgia have released statements sending their condolences to the Carter family:
President Carter dedicated his life to serving our great nation and the people of Georgia.
As a true servant-leader, he devoted his post-presidency to spreading the very best of American ideals across the globe. His commitment to peace, democracy, and human rights has left an indelible mark on the world.
Tricia and I mourn his passing and extend our deepest condolences to the Carter family.
May President Carter be at peace, reunited with his true love Rosalynn in their eternal rest.
“President Carter taught us through his example that it’s not the office you hold but the orientation you have that gives you the ability to serve effectively. A moral powerhouse, he moved us closer toward our highest ideals while in the governor’s mansion and the White House, but perhaps even more so after leaving the presidency. A former president, he got his hands dirty, literally building people’s homes while helping them build their lives. President Carter was a Matthew 25 Christian. He believed, as I do, that the true test of your faith is the depth of your commitment to the most marginalized members of the human family. I believe he passed that test and has now graduated into immortality. Democracies around the world are stronger and children across the globe are alive today because of President Carter’s work—what a legacy to leave.”
“A former Georgia State Senator, Governor of Georgia, and President of the United States, President Carter’s lifetime of work and dedication to public service changed the lives of many across our state, our country, and around the world.
Among his lifetime of service and countless accomplishments, President Carter will be remembered for his commitment to democracy and human rights, his enduring faith, his philanthropic leadership, and his deep love of family.
From Plains to across the State of Georgia, the United States, and around the world, millions will forever admire and appreciate all that President Carter did for the United States and for the global community.”
Today, the world lost a giant – a force for peace and democracy, someone who lived a life of service to others, and a compassionate leader who sought to bring people together. Jimmy Carter’s legacy – from his humble beginnings in Southwest Georgia, through his time as Georgia’s governor and America’s president and through his eventual leadership on the world stage – will remain uplifting and inspirational.
I have been blessed to call him friend and mentor for over 50 years and to be his Congressman for 32 of those years. He and his late wife, Rosalynn, were shining lights of faith, love, and devotion to each other and to humankind. Their work to promote health, housing, human rights, democracy, and peace put their Christian values into action.
My wife, Vivian, and I – along with countless others across the globe – extend our deepest condolences to the Carter family. The immense depth of sadness we feel in his passing reflects the soaring heights of altruism and selflessness he lived and for which his hometown of Plains, Georgia, and the world are all the better.
On social media, national and local leaders gave their condolences and shared their memories with former President Carter:
President Carter was an amazing Georgian and a firm believer in Christ. Today, he goes to be with his beloved wife, Rosalynn, in Heaven.
Please join me in praying for the whole Carter family, the State of Georgia, and the country following this tremendous loss.

If we all strived to live half the life of service to the Lord and to our fellow man as Jimmy Carter did, the world would be a much better place.
God Bless Jimmy Carter and the entire Carter family.
Please join me in praying for the family and friends of President Jimmy Carter, a man of faith with a servant’s heart who dedicated decades of his life to our great country.
May he Rest in Peace.
It is with a heavy heart that Robin and I join the nation in mourning the loss of former President Jimmy Carter. President Carter was a devoted father, loving husband, and decorated patriot.
Growing up on a peanut farm in Central Georgia, President Carter learned the value of an honest day’s work at an early age. His sense of duty led him to the Naval Academy in Annapolis, where he began a lifetime of public service. He was also a champion of philanthropic efforts in the decades following his presidency. President Carter was living proof that public service does not end with elected office.
On behalf of Georgians everywhere, Robin and I offer our deepest sympathies and prayers to the Carter family.
Jimmy Carter’s legacy will be defined not just by his presidency, but by his lifelong commitment to serving others. America was made better by his leadership–in the Navy, in his political career, and in building homes for those in need.
My heart is with the Carter family as they grieve his passing.
Our nation lost a great Georgian today. President Jimmy Carter was a distinguished public servant, a proud farmer, an accomplished Navy veteran, and a graduate of the US Naval Academy. He lived the American dream and exemplified the ideals of public service to his community. Even after leaving the White House, President Carter maintained his efforts to serve those in need. His work through The Carter Center improved and saved the lives of millions worldwide, nearly eradicating previously common deadly diseases. President Carter’s devotion to his country, community, and family are principles worth living by. His legacy lives on as the namesake of USS Jimmy Carter (SSN-23).
