Lawmakers demand transparency as briefing on Trump's Iran strikes gets postponed

Description

WASHINGTON (TNND) — A classified briefing that was supposed to inform House members and senators about President Donald Trump's strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities that eventually led to a ceasefire agreement has been postponed, according to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

The Senate briefing was rescheduled for Thursday so that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio can attend, sources confirmed to The Associated Press. It is unclear when the House will be briefed.

Trump on Monday proclaimed that Israel and Iran had agreed to a "Complete and Total CEASEFIRE." Shortly after it went into effect, Israel accused Iran of launching missiles into its airspace, with Trump growing frustrated and saying the two countries "don't know what the f*** they're doing."

"This last-minute postponement of our briefing is outrageous. It's evasive, it's derelict. They're bobbing and weaving and ducking. Senators deserve full transparency," Schumer told reporters when the briefing was postponed. "There is a legal obligation for the administration to inform Congress about precisely what is happening. What are they afraid of? Why won't they engage Congress in the critical details, the results of the recent strike, the scope and trajectory of the conflict, the administration's long term strategy to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, the potential risks facing American citizens and our service members, who we all have an obligation to protect."

Democrats in Congress and some Republicans have questioned Trump's unilateral decision to launch military action, arguing that he should have gone to Congress for approval.

“We expect them to explain to the American people what were the results in terms of actually thwarting Iran’s capacity to become a nuclear power and what are the Trump administration’s plans to avoid another potentially disastrous war in the Middle East, where thousands of American lives are potentially at risk,” House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries said.

Other lawmakers suggested Trump should be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Representative Buddy Carter of Georgia wrote, "President Trump's influence was instrumental in forging a swift agreement that many believed to be impossible. President Trump also took bold, decisive actions to halt Iran’s nuclear ambitions and ensure that the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism remains incapable of acquiring a nuclear weapon.”

Sen. Bernie Moreno and Sen. Katie Britt agreed by posting on X, "Nobel Peace Prize" and “Historic! The President of Peace!”

Senate Democrats are also forcing a vote as soon as this week on a resolution by Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., requiring congressional approval for specific military action in Iran.

“You have a debate like this so that the entire American public, whose sons and daughters are in the military and whose lives will be at risk in war, get to see the debate and reach their own conclusion together with the elected officials about whether the mission is worth it or not,” Kaine said Monday.

Communication between the White House and Congress about Iran has been limited for most members. Trump sent congressional leaders a short letter Monday serving as his official notice of the strikes, two days after the bombs fell.

Trump said the attacks were “limited in scope and purpose” and “designed to minimize casualties, deter future attacks and limit the risk of escalation.”
