Description

HAHIRA, Ga. (WALB) - The city of Hahira and surrounding law enforcement agencies are mourning the loss of Officer Caleb Abney.

Officer Abney was killed after being struck by a northbound vehicle while conducting a routine traffic stop, according to reports. Details surrounding the crash remain under investigation, but officials confirm Abney died while actively serving his community.

On Friday, Feb. 20, multiple agencies escorted Abney’s body to Macon for an autopsy. His body was escorted by the Hahira Police Department, the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office and several neighboring agencies.

Procession honors fallen officer

On the return trip from Macon, agencies across the region will hang a flag in his honor in a solemn procession stretching across South Georgia. Law enforcement agencies are expected to hang a flag over Mitchell Street above the interstate in tribute.

Previous service background

Before joining Hahira Police, Abney served with Lowndes County Fire Rescue. The department shared photos on Facebook, honoring him and remembering his dedication to service.

Chief remembers officer as family

Hahira Police Chief Stryde Jones said Abney was more than just a badge.

“He was family,” Jones said.

The chief said losing an officer is difficult for any department, but for a small agency like Hahira, the loss is especially personal.

“In a small department, officers become more than coworkers they become brothers and sisters,” Jones said.

Chief Jones described Abney as “a great asset not only to the police department, but to the city of Hahira and the entire area they serve.”

Jones said the Abney family has a strong support system and is taking things one day at a time.

At this time, there are no confirmed details regarding the driver involved. The investigation continues.
