VALDOSTA, Ga. (WCTV) - UPDATE: The lane closures are now postponed until after the 4th of July weekend, officials said Wednesday afternoon. According to the Georgia Department of Transportation, construction is set to begin “at some point after the July 4th holiday weekend.”

INITIAL STORY: Lanes on North St. Augustine Road near Norman Drive in Valdosta are being closed for signal and drainage improvements starting next week, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.

The lane closures are scheduled to begin on June 29 and expected to last three weeks, weather permitting. The lanes from Interstate 75 interchange at Exit 18 to Norman Drive are closing as part of a Transportation Investment Act (TIA) project. The Interstate 75 northbound access to North Street, Augustine Road at Exit 18, is also being closed to traffic.

Officials said the Georgia Power crews need space to “safely relocate power poles along the roadway.” GDOT said residents should expect backups near Valdosta Mall and suggested taking alternative routes to destinations, including Baytree and Hickory Road.

“Law enforcement officers will be directing traffic and drivers should be alert to both them and posted signage while proceeding at reduced speeds,” GDOT said in the press release.

The lane closures are expected to change as the utility teams move within the site. Contractors for the TIA project expect to have major construction done by January 2027.
