WASHINGTON (TNND) — Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed to meet with President Donald Trump, though a specific date and location have yet to be determined, according to a Kremlin official.
Putin’s foreign affairs adviser, Yuri Ushakov, told media outlets that a summit could take place next week at a venue that has been decided "in principle."
"The venue of the meeting between the presidents of the Russian Federation and the United States, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, has been agreed, and the Kremlin will inform about it later," Ushakov said.
The idea of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy joining the summit was brought up by Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff, but Ushakov said the meeting would only be between Trump and Putin.
“We propose, first of all, to focus on preparing a bilateral meeting with Trump, and we consider it most important that this meeting be successful and productive,” he said.
The planned meeting comes after Witkoff met with Putin on Wednesday ahead of Trump's deadline for Russia to reach a peace deal with Ukraine or face severe sanctions. Trump previously said the ultimatum was set for 50 days on July 14 and tariffs would be set at 100%.
Trump wrote on Truth Social that the meeting was "highly productive” and “great progress was made.”
"Great progress was made! Afterwards, I updated some of our European Allies. Everyone agrees this War must come to a close, and we will work towards that in the days and weeks to come," the president said.
Zelenskyy said Wednesday evening that he and Trump spoke on the phone after Witkoff met with Putin.
"Our joint position with our partners is absolutely clear – the war must end," Zelenskyy wrote in an update on X. "And it must be done honestly. European leaders were on the call, and I am grateful to each of them for their support. We discussed what was spelled out in Moscow."
"Ukraine will definitely defend its independence. We all need a lasting and reliable peace," he continued. "Russia must end the war that it itself started. Thank you to everyone who stands with Ukraine."
The meeting would be the first U.S.-Russia summit since 2021, when former President Joe Biden met Putin in Geneva.
The war has killed tens of thousands of troops on both sides as well as more than 12,000 Ukrainian civilians, according to the United Nations.
