VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) - Lowndes baseball senior Matthew Kerrigan delivered a dominant two-way performance this week, earning player of the week honors.

After Lowndes dropped a game to Lee County in February, Kerrigan wanted redemption. On the mound, the senior went five scoreless innings. In 72 pitches, he threw 51 strikes, allowing just four hits and zero walks.

At the plate, Kerrigan went 3 for 4 with a double, a home run to center field, four RBIs and a stolen base.

“I’d say the most thing is just filling up the zone. Because when you fill up the zone, high school players are going to get themselves out and then it gives you a chance for your defense to do their work. And then just at the plate today, just like staying in my approach, just looking for something I can drive and just work well for me today. Obviously, offense is something I focus on more, but I mean, pitching, I just get to go out there and have fun and there’s not as much pressure on me. So I just try to fill up the zone always and just even give up weak contact and just try to do my job on the mound for my team,” Kerrigan said.

Kerrigan has a state title from 2024 and was a runner-up in 2025. He said he knows his Vikings have a chance to make a deep run and is looking to cap off his senior year with one more ring.
