CHICAGO — Jury selection is set to begin today in the first civil trial related to the deadly Boeing 737 Max crashes.

The trial is taking place in a federal courthouse in Chicago. It will focus on determining "fair and reasonable compensation" for the families of the victims of the Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crash in 2019, which resulted in the deaths of all 157 people on board.

The trial is expected to last two weeks, with opening statements centering on the damages Boeing owes to the victims' families.

Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg recently addressed a Senate committee, acknowledging the company's past failures.

Ortberg also defended Boeing's efforts to improve safety, particularly after a blown door plug incident during a 737 Max flight last year.

"I want to extend my personal condolences for the painful loss on our aircraft and offer my pledge to make the necessary changes so this never happens again," Ortberg said.

Boeing took responsibility for the crashes in an agreement with the families who lost loved ones.

However, the company argued that the victims died instantly—and therefore the families are not entitled to financial compensation.
