IRWIN COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) — An Irwin County deputy is recovering after a crash with a suspected drunk driver during an emergency response on Monday, April 20.
The Irwin County Sheriff’s Office (ICSO) said Deputy Sweets was responding to a violent fight in the city of Rebecca when his patrol car collided with another vehicle at Satilla Road and State Route 90.
Sweets reportedly had his lights and sirens activated.
Other first responders pulled him from the car and airlifted him to Macon for treatment, ICSO said.

Sweets has since been released and is expected to make a full recovery, according to the sheriff’s office.
The Georgia State Patrol (GSP) is investigating the crash, and the other driver was charged with Driving Under the Influence while operating a motor vehicle.
Officials did not release the identity of the other driver involved in this incident.
