CORDELE, Ga. (WALB) — An infant death investigation is underway in Cordele after a 2-month-old boy died Friday evening, according to Crisp County Coroner Willie Williams.

Williams said the coroner’s office was called to the Emergency Room at Crisp Regional Hospital around 5:31 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 21, where the infant was pronounced deceased.

“We received a fresh initial call from Crisp Regional Hospital where we responded to the E.R. in reference to the infant’s death,” Williams said.

The child’s mother and other family members were at the hospital when officials arrived.

From the hospital, investigators traced the incident back to a home on 104 Ross Street in Cordele, located about five minutes away from the medical facility.

The Cordele Police Department and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) are now actively investigating the death.

“We just want to let citizens know that this case is being investigated and we will determine the cause and the manner of this child’s death,” Williams said.

Williams confirmed the infant’s body will be taken to the GBI crime lab in Macon on Monday for an autopsy to determine how the child died.
