MOULTRIE, Ga. (WALB) — The Moultrie Colquitt County Humane Society says its transportation van was vandalized, leaving the vehicle unable to run and delaying animal transport work.

According to an incident report from the Moultrie Police Department, the damage was discovered after an employee smelled gasoline. Upon inspection, they found the gas panel broken off and the gas lines cut.

Van damage delays transports

Pope said the damage created a problem for transports planned for Friday, including animals from Albany and Ben Hill County that were supposed to be taken to North Georgia.

“So it actually put us in a predicament because on Friday we had a pretty good transportation that we were going up to North Georgia for, and we actually help out some of our local humane societies around here,” Pope said. “So we were taking some from Albany, and we were going to take some from Ben Hill County. And we weren’t able to do that.”

Pope said she does not know who damaged the van but believes the person may have been trying to steal gas. She said a gas container cap was found under the van.

“It was a pretty sad day,” Pope said. “I don’t really understand why someone would want to vandalize a transportation van that actually helps animals in our county.”

Fundraiser planned for repairs

Pope said the vandalism left staff upset because of the work the humane society does in the community.

“It kind of made me feel a little aggravated,” Pope said. “I was pretty mad that someone could do this to us, especially with how much that we try to help our community out on a daily basis.”

The Moultrie Colquitt County Humane Society is holding a fundraiser Saturday, June 27, at its facility to raise money for repairs to the van.

Anyone with information about who may have damaged the van is asked to call the Moultrie Police Department.
