Description
WORTH COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - Following another wreck Thursday at an intersection in Worth County, that sees several crashes each year, a woman is calling on the Georgia Department of Transportation to speed up the project’s development.
The Roundabout Plan
The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is moving forward with plans to build a roundabout at the intersection of State Route 32 and State Route 300 in Worth County, a project aimed at improving safety and reducing serious crashes.
Over the years WALB has reported on a number of crashes at the intersection, some that were deadly.
According to GDOT, the roundabout project is currently in development and is scheduled to be let in Fiscal Year 2029. Officials note that project timelines are subject to change.
One woman says she has reached out to GDOT several times begging for a remedy to the problem.
“There’s wrecks there all the time, and I just hope and pray every day that me or my husband aren’t one of the ones that are going to be in the wrecks because we drive through that intersection two or three times a day. How many people have to die before it gets to be pushed to the front of the line?”
How GDOT Came Up With Plan
GDOT selected a roundabout for the intersection because many of the crashes recorded there have been angle crashes, which are often high-speed collisions that can result in severe injuries or fatalities.
Transportation officials said many of those crashes occurred when drivers on SR 32 attempted to cross SR 300 or make a left turn onto the highway.

Roundabouts are designed to significantly reduce the risk of angle crashes by slowing traffic and keeping vehicles moving in the same direction. GDOT said the design also helps improve traffic flow compared to traditional intersections.
The roundabout plan replaces an earlier proposal for a Reduced Conflict U-Turn, or RCUT. Under that design, drivers traveling on SR 32 would have been required to turn right onto SR 300 before making a U-turn farther down the roadway rather than crossing directly through the intersection or turning left.
The Delay
However, GDOT said Worth County officials objected to the RCUT design. As a result, the agency shifted to a roundabout, which required the project development process to begin again.
In the meantime, GDOT is reminding drivers to remain alert when approaching the intersection, obey posted speed limits and traffic signs, and allow enough time to safely cross or enter SR 300 traffic.
