Description

CLINCH COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) — What started as a small fire has now turned into one of the largest and most dangerous wildfires in South Georgia.

The Pineland Road Fire ignited on April 18, just before 5 p.m., in Clinch County, about 13 miles northwest of Fargo. Officials say the fire started after a stray spark from a welding operation fell to the forest floor and ignited surrounding vegetation.

Within just days, the flames exploded from only a few acres to thousands, fueled by extreme drought, gusty winds and low humidity.

Now, just over a week later, the fire has burned more than 32,000 acres and is only 10% contained.

How it got this bad

Fire officials say this is not a typical wildfire.

South Georgia is currently under exceptional drought conditions, the most severe level. Dry vegetation is acting as fuel, allowing flames to spread rapidly.

Crews say the fire is showing extreme behavior, including wind-driven runs and spotting, where embers jump ahead of the main fire and start new fires.

What’s at stake

The fire is now threatening:

  • 187 homes
  • More than 100 other structures
  • Communities including Fruitland and Bamberg

Infrastructure is also at risk, including major roadways, power lines and rail lines.

A mandatory evacuation has been issued in parts of Echols County as conditions continue to shift.

Efforts on the ground

There are more than 160 personnel assigned to the fire, with additional resources still coming in. Crews are working around the clock, using tractor plows and fire engines to slow the spread.

WALB is speaking with county officials and neighboring county fire chiefs to explain the ongoing response efforts, the challenges crews are facing and how the community is stepping up to support firefighters.

Officials say one of the biggest concerns right now is how quickly conditions can change, especially with wind shifts that could push flames toward more homes.
