WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump will speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday as he continues to push to end the war in Ukraine with a 30-day ceasefire.
"Many elements of a Final Agreement have been agreed to, but much remains," Trump wrote on Truth Social Monday night. "Thousands of young soldiers, and others, are being killed. Each week brings 2,500 soldier deaths, from both sides, and it must end NOW."
The call is expected to happen within two hours, beginning around 9 a.m. EST.
Putin said Thursday that he agrees "in principle" with the United States' proposal for a 30-day ceasefire with Ukraine adding the terms of the deal would need to be worked out but that it may "pave the way" to lasting peace.
It’s a bad situation in Russia, and it’s a bad situation in Ukraine,” Trump told reporters on Monday. “What’s happening in Ukraine is not good, but we’re going to see if we can work a peace agreement, a ceasefire and peace. And I think we’ll be able to do it.
In preparation for the call, special envoy Steve Witkoff met last week with Putin in Moscow to discuss the proposal. Secretary of State Marco Rubio had persuaded senior Ukrainian officials during talks in Saudi Arabia to agree to the ceasefire framework.
Trump told reporters on Air Force One Sunday that land and power plants are part of the conversation around bringing the war to a close.
“We will be talking about land. We will be talking about power plants,” he said while describing it as "dividing up certain assets.”
Putin’s spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Tuesday that Trump and Putin will discuss the war in Ukraine but added that there are also a “large number of questions" regarding normalizing U.S.-Russia relations.
Witkoff and White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt suggested that U.S. and Russian officials have discussed the fate of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant — Europe's largest — in southern Ukraine.
The plant is a significant asset, producing nearly a quarter of Ukraine’s electricity in the year before the war.
In his nightly video address, Zelenskyy said Monday that he remains doubtful that Putin is ready for peace.
"Now, almost a week later, it’s clear to everyone in the world — even to those who refused to acknowledge the truth for the past three years — that it is Putin who continues to drag out this war," Zelenskyy said.
