Description
LEE COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - Lee County saw flooding on Tuesday, Aug. 5 in parts of the county due to heavy rain on Monday night.
Within a five-hour period, the county recorded 7.55 inches of rain near Highway 82 and the Doublegate area, according to the Lee County Emergency Management Agency (EMA). This led to flash flooding. Several residents reported water accumulating on roadways, in yards and in homes.
On Monday, WALB reported that the sheriff’s office posted deputies at Wiregrass Way and Ivy Lane, which were also impacted.
According to Lee County Public Works Director Mike Sistrunk, most roads are clear, but they still need to get water flowing on:
- Ambleside Drive
- Hawkstead Drive
- Wiregrass Way
Additionally, a woman drove into a ditch on State Route 32 and Mossey Dell Road. The sheriff’s office received the call at around 8:44 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 4. She was not harmed, but water from the ditch entered the car.
“Lee County First Responders and the Public Works Department arrived at these areas to evaluate the situation and communicate with residents. Lee County EMA is monitoring the situation and is also monitoring the creeks,” said Lee County EMA.
The current creek levels are:
- Muckalee Creek is at 9.10 feet.
- Kinchafoonee Creek is at 9.70 feet.
The National Weather Service (NWS) forecasts that the Kinchafoonee will crest at 14 feet within the next 24 hours.
Lee County EMA said it will continue to monitor water levels and post updated gauge models to its Facebook page.
Lee County EMA posted to Facebook that sandbags are available for residents impacted by Monday’s flash flooding. Anyone in need of sandbags is asked to go to Lee County Public Works at 759 Highway 32 East.
Anyone in need of assistance is asked to call (229) 759-6012.
Several South Georgia counties are under a Flood Watch until Tuesday evening.
